Federal health care funding a no-go in Florida
After rejecting a $2.1 million federal health care grant, Florida law makers have severed a pipeline towards $35 million in federal funding that would have served the state’s aging and elderly community.
The $35 million would have served to move elderly patients out of long-term care facilities and back into their homes or independent-living facilities, thus allowing them to live more independently and saving their families over $70,000 a year in nursing home fees.
Decisions like this have Florida residents concerned, as this most recent decision only adds to the $54 million in federal funding that the state has either failed to apply for or rejected.
While some, such as Rep. Denise Grimsley (R), claim that Florida is already successful at “moving people from nursing homes,” others disagree and feel as if their tax dollars are flowing into other states.
