American South leads in “green” job employment
A recent report conducted by the Brookings Institute shows that six out of the 21 states that have created at least 50,000 renewable energy-related or “clean economy” jobs are located in the South.
Making the list is Florida with 102,967 jobs, followed by Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee,Virginia and South Carolina.
After reviewing data than spanned from 2003 to 2010 from every county in the United States, the Institute found that the sector in its entirety employs 2.7 million people, with jobs that pay hire wages than those in most other sectors.
Also, the largest increases in employment were found in wave and ocean power, with the most new jobs found in conservation jobs.
Promoting energy efficiency and investing in clean energy jobs is a priority of the Center, as outlined in our Agenda for a Better South.
