Tennessee to take front seat in solar farm power
A new 5-megawatt solar farm is in the works for West Tennessee and upon completion, will be the largest solar farm in the Southeast, producing enough clean power for over 1,000 homes.
The West Tennessee Solar Farm Project, located near Stanton, TN., rests on 35 acres and will convert solar power from 21,000 panels. All generated energy will be sold to the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The $31 million project, funded by a Department of Energy grant under the federal stimulus bill, will ultimately feature a welcome center that will serve to promote solar power to the public.
This new facility does not stand alone, as the state already hosts a 1-megawatt facility in Jackson, TN., and has another 1-megawatt facility in the works for the Smyrna, TN., airport.
As outlined in our Agenda for a Better South, our center has set a goal for each Southern state to develop an energy plan that improves per capita energy efficiency by 20 percent in 2020. Investing in renewable energy projects such as solar power farms in an excellent means towards achieving this goal.
