Volt arrives in Carolinas

North Carolina and South Carolina residents will now have access to the Chevy Volt, a plug-in hybrid electric car.

Currently, only a handful of states possess this environmentally-friendly treasure — only one of which (Virginia) is located in the South.

General Motors, owners of the Chevy Volt, had already sold 2,745 Volts in the first portion of 2011 — lagging behind its Nissan competitor, which has already sold 3,875 of its own low-end electric car, the Nissan Leaf. Tennessee is the only Southern state to carry the Leaf.

In an effort to increase sales, GM has lowered the cost of the Volt to around $40,000. This, coupled with the federal tax credit that may accompany the purchase, could give purchasers an additional $7,500 towards the purchase of their new vehicle.

Under a portion of a $30.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Recovery Act Transportation Electrification Initiative, efforts to increase public awareness and understanding of plug-in electric vehicles will be conducted through a partnership between the Electric Power Research Institute and General Motors as the first 27 Volts in North Carolina will be distributed to major utility companies.

Eco-friendly vehicles are a smart way to enhance energy efficiency in the South — which is one of the goals outlined within our Agenda for a Better South.
