Carolinas see rise in homeless female veterans

Both North Carolina and South Carolina have a new issue to face: a rise in the number of homeless female veterans.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, roughly 90 percent of female veterans who are homeless live in Fayetteville, North Carolina — which is the home of Fort Bragg.

Resources to assist these women are minimal and researchers believe that the number of homeless female veterans is much higher than what was reported due to women who do not seek assistance to find support and housing.

This projection, combined with the already staggering statistic that women make up almost 4 percent of our nation’s homeless veteran population, is alarming — and this percentage will most certainly increase as soldiers return home from war.

As noted in our Agenda for a Better South, ensuring opportunities for all residents should be a top priority for all states, and as we all know, war cannot last forever. Now that the date for the homecoming of our soldiers has been set, action needs to be taken in order to prepare for this highly anticipated and happy moment. Allowing those who have served our country to come home to literally nothing is a poor, unacceptable decision on behalf of our country that should be addressed immediately.
