Katrina, six years later

The good folks at the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center have developed a great report of numbers that highlight changes to New Orleans and Louisiana six years after Hurricane Katrina.  As people up and down the Eastern Seaboard grapple with Hurricane Irene, it’s important to remember the continuing impact today of Katrina — six years later.

Here’s what the GNOCDC offeHurricane Katrina, August 2005red in an email today:

“The world has witnessed an astounding number of disasters since 2005 — from Haiti to China to Pakistan to Japan — not to mention devastating tornados across the South just a few months ago. But Katrina and the levee failures were the most devastating disaster in U.S. history, (1) and all eyes continue to turn to New Orleans to learn if it is possible for a region to recover from such an immense catastrophe.
“This New Orleans Index at Six is a comprehensive look at the progress the New Orleans metro has made toward greater prosperity, inclusion, and sustainability.  It also identifies the challenges that remain as well as the efforts needed to continue to move our region forward on the path to transformation.
