Louisiana receives $142 million grant for literacy
The state of Louisiana is set to receive a $142.4 million grant over the course of five years to increase child reading and writing proficiency levels for K-12 students.
The Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Education, awarded funding to 6 states based on their ability to train teachers and provide instructional materials as well as their “ability to run competitive selections for local education bodies, including charter schools.” States will also be required to collect and analyze data on participant outcomes.
Grant recipients must use their funds to incorporate technologies that address student learning challenges and explain how the use of such technology will increase student engagement and increase teacher effectiveness.
With these new funds, the state will reach over 40,000 students during the first year, 60,000 students during the second year and an additional 5,000 students for each year to follow.
