Creative people from across the South have joined the team to upload stories about progressive issues and the South to the ThinkSouth blog. Meet our team as of January 2008:

  • Bob Davis, Anniston, AL. Bob is the editorial page editor of The Anniston Star. A journalist in Texas prior to joining the Star, Davis is a native of Aliceville, Ala.

  • James Hunter, a native of Hillsborough, N.C., is a congressional staffer in Washington, D.C. He says he hopes to advance the cause of Southern Progressivism through political involvement.

  • Sam Kakavitsas, who grew up in Fort Mill, S.C., is a rising senior at the College of Charleston, where he is studying political science and math. A summer 2006 intern with the Center for a Better South, Sam is interested in political strategy and consulting.

    Dr. Laura Petes of Tallahassee, Fla., is a post-doctoral associate at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa, Fla. Her research focuses on how climate change and environmental
    stress affect marine ecosystems. Laura is a native of Chapel Hill, NC.

  • Lee Powell is deputy director of the Mississippi Arts Commission. Former executive director of the Mississippi Opera (1996-2001), she has 18 years of public relations and communications experience. Lee holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Communication from Mississippi College. She and husband Col. Tim Powell, director of public affairs for the Mississippi National Guard, live near the Ludlow Community and are the proud parents of Dori, a Papillon born in Kokomo, MS.

  • John Quinterno of Chapel Hill, N.C., is a research associate with the North Carolina Budget & Tax Center, which is part of the N.C. Justice Center. Previously, he worked as the assistant director of the Program on Southern Politics, Media & Public Life, a think tank based at UNC-Chapel Hill. There, he wrote for and edited the political magazines SouthNow and NC DataNet. He is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Notre Dame.

  • Warwick Sabin, Little Rock, AR. Warwick is a vice president at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark.. The former associate editor of the Arkansas Times, he served as director of development for President Bill Clinton, and has worked on Capitol Hill, at the U.S. Embassy in London, and Foreign Affairs magazine.

  • John L.S. Simpkins, Charleston, SC. John, a co-founder of the Center for a Better South, is a constitutional law professor at the Charleston School of Law. More.

  • Sam Spence of Charlotte, NC, is a student at the College of Charleston studying political science, and historic preservation and community planning. He is interested in urban issues, state politics and political strategy. Sam served as a Fall 2006 Intern for the Center for a Better South.

  • Andy Brack, Charleston, SC. Andy, president of the Center, edits and publishes a weekly legislative forecast and newspaper column (S.C. Statehouse Report) and a daily news service, SC Clips. More.
