BIG NEWS
Center approved for tax-exempt status

After a wait of more than 34 months, the Internal Revenue Service has approved the Center for a Better South's application for federal tax-exempt status. (Approval letter.)

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, contributions to the Center are tax-deductible.

GIVE TODAY
Your tax-deductible donation can help new project

Over the last two years, we've relied on generous donations from individuals to fund two highly successful public policy books for Southern policymakers - - a 2006 text on tax reform proposals and this year's book of environmental ideas.

Now that we're in the midst of the holiday season, we'd appreciate if you'd keep us in mind for a gift from Santa. If you have end-of-the-year funds dedicated for charitable purposes, we'd appreciate your contribution.

With your tax-deductible donation, you will be a part of building a foundation of facts and ideas that are bringing strength and renewed promise to the South. We need all the help you can give to continue our work.

Please give $100 or even $500 so we can get going on our next big project -- a book of ideas to boost public participation in the voting process (see more below).

ON TAP
Next up: Political participation ideas

Center director John L.S. Simpkins is working on the Center's next project - - a book of ideas on how to boost political participation in the South.

"We're surveying how states organize their election systems and looking at whether it is easy to register to vote, alternative ways to casting ballots and whether it is easy to cast absentee ballots," explained Simpkins, a constitutional law professor at the Charleston School of Law.

Other issues being explored in the book, which is expected to be published in late 2008, are:

  • Ease of entry into the process of political participation, including looks at candidate filing fees, registration requirements and other rules governing candidates.

  • What's working - - examinations of what is working and what's not in the election process in the South.

  • Best practices from other states.

If you've got a suggestion for Simpkins, please send comments to:

JOIN OUR BLOG TEAM
Buy Better South stuff

We've been a little remiss over the last couple of months in the routine feeding, care and maintenance of our blog, ThinkSouth.org. Now we hope you'll volunteer to join our blog team to help revive some life into this great resource.

ThinkSouth.org is a roundup of interesting news stories and ideas as they relate to the South. The basic model we're following is this:

  • Energize a team of people across the South.

  • Get them to post at least once a week (we'll assign days) to the blog.

  • What would you post? Anything you see in your normal course of reading that other progressive folks would find interesting -- news stories, reports, factoids, trends and the like.

There's a power of sharing information from multiple pairs of eyeballs. What you read may not be what we read -- but we may need to know the cool stuff you read.

So join this team today. If you're interested, please send an email to Center President Andy Brack.
